Easing into the Summer with Rooibos

Work has been really hectic lately, so I haven't written much about tea. Happily, that should change soon and I can get back to more regular tea-blogging. Even though I have not been writing about tea, I have certainly been drinking it.

Recently, I have been enjoying a somewhat different drink: rooibos. Made with the Aspalathus linearis plant, and grown only in South Africa, rooibos (sometimes called "red tea," even though it comes from a different plant than tea) is an enjoyable drink with plenty of flavor and plenty of health benefits. Over the last few weeks, I have been drinking two varieties of rooibos from Rishi-Tea:

Both of these are organic, fair trade products. I have a lot more to say about these, but I'll save that for a later blog entry. More to follow soon!

I have tried rooibos a couple times, and it's pleasant but never made a strong impression. I may have to try it again sometime. Most of the rooibos I've seen seems to be flavored, like the two you mentioned, but I think I'd like to try a plain rooibos for the full effect.

I have tried plain rooibos. It's very good, IMHO. As you said, rooibos is pleasant. That pleasantness, however, is precisely what made a strong impression on me.

I like the flavored beverages when I can still taste the underlying main flavor: the tea or the rooibos (or whatever other plant forms the basis for the infusion). The two kinds of rooibos I mentioned in this entry--blueberry rooibos and Earl Grey rooibos--allowed the rooibos flavor to come through clearly and delight my taste buds.

I hope you will enjoy the plain rooibos, if you decide to try it.
